Your provider will examine you and perform testing as appropriate to determine if you have H1N1 Flu. If you are determined to be infected you will be treated with an appropriate antiviral medication like Tamiflu or Relenza. Treatment is most effective if started within 48 hours of developing symptoms. Currently the CDC recommends that prophylactic (preventative) treatment be started for household contacts who are at high-risk for complications of influenza. This would include persons 65 or older, children younger than 5 and persons with certain chronic medical conditions. Your provider will discuss with you the need for preventative treatment of your family members. School children who are at high risk (have certain chronic medical conditions) who had close contact with a suspected, probable or confirmed case should be treated. This virus is contagious from one day before symptoms develop until 7 days after symptoms develop. Please stay home if you are sick! |
